The same transparent artwork can look clean on a cream T-shirt mockup and strangely boxed-in on a charcoal one. A smoky edge turns pale, a shadow becomes grainy, or black detail meant to disappear returns as gray. That does not prove a corrupt file or a printing error. Treat the shirt as part of the result

Ask whether the artwork depends on the shirt showing through partially transparent pixels. If it does, the dark-garment route deserves direct inspection. A color swatch is not merely a storefront decoration; it is one input to the product.

Diagnose the artwork before exporting again

Open the source over a light and a dark background, then name the failing behavior. “The black moon halo should merge with the charcoal shirt” is actionable; “the dark mockup feels wrong” is not. Separate visibility, transition, contrast, and boundary problems.

Inspect the effects most likely to borrow the garment color. The file inspection tells you what the sample must prove; it does not replace the sample.

Remove a garment color when neither file produces a result you can describe honestly, the route cannot map files safely, or the seller cannot sample the combination. Fewer supported colors are better than unexplained asset sprawl.

A light/dark alternate should preserve canvas dimensions, subject scale, visible placement, composition, and design identity. Change only the treatment needed for contrast or edge behavior. If subject, layout, slogan, and palette all change, it is another design with a separate sample burden.

Use unmistakable internal names and map each intended garment color to the approved file in the current provider setup. Filenames alone do not prove correct routing. Confirm the live product configuration and keep a simple version marker.

The purpose is not to prove perfect color. It is to see whether the important shapes, edges, fades, placement, and buyer-facing promise survive the two supported routes.

Hypothetical example: one moon illustration

On white, the smoke reads but the stars weaken; on black, the expected blend becomes a gray field.

The creator makes two controlled versions: the light file keeps the smoke and outlines the stars; the dark file replaces the transparent smoke with an opaque halftone and removes the unnecessary halo. Canvas, scale, and placement remain fixed. If the paired samples still cannot support the dark result, black leaves the offer.
